Ministry of Crab was created as a culinary homecoming of Sri Lanka’s iconic lagoon crab, which has long since gained popularity on and off the island.
The Crabs are the ‘stars of the show’, ranging from 500g ‘Small’ crabs to 2KG ‘Crabzillas’ plated up in a variety of ways from fiery Pepper Crab to the unique Garlic Chilli Crab and the succulent Baked Crab. The amendments also include fine seafood from the Thai Coastal regions such as King prawns, fresh clams and oysters. We believe that freshness is of the utmost importance and employ a no-freezer policy in our restaurant to serve you the best using the highest quality of ingredients.
Ministry of Crab Bangkok is located in the “Sam-ed” building, a retail commercial complex in the heart of Bangkok’s Metropolitan, in the center of the food, business, and shopping districts. We aim to not only provide mouthwatering seafood but also a culinary experience that you will never forget! Get your crab on, Bangkok!

Kumar Sangakkara is a Sri Lankan cricket commentator and former cricketer and captain of the Sri Lankan national team. He is widely regarded as one of the world’s most influential cricketers and one of the greatest batsmen of all time. As a self-proclaimed foodie, Kumar fulfilled his life-long dreams of starting a restaurant by partnering with Chef Dharshan Munidasa and fellow Sri Lankan cricket partner, Mahela Jayawardene by stepping in as the Deputy Chairman of Ministry of Crab. As a message to all of his patrons, Kumar states, “Welcome. Ministry of Crab is a celebration of Sri Lanka; our heritage and our wonderfully fresh and diverse ingredients. For me, this is the realization of my dream to be part of a culinary experience that I hope will enthral your taste buds and leave you happy and wanting more. Enjoy.”
Dharshan Munidasa is a world-famous Half-Japanese and Half-Sri Lankan chef, restaurateur and television personality. Chef Dharshan applies his Japanese mindset to cuisine in Srilanka by focusing on the supply chain and freshness of ingredients. He founded Nihonbashi and Ministry of Crab – two of Sri Lanka’s most successful restaurants – both of which are the only Sri Lankan restaurants to feature on Asia’s 50 Best Restaurants List. As a message to all of his patrons, Chef Dharshan states, “We hope you enjoy what the Ministry of Crab has to offer, we are merely messengers of great ingredients.”
Mahela Jayawardene is a Sri Lankan cricket coach and former cricketer. He is especially known as the modern ‘greats of batsmanship” due to his mastery in spin bowling. Besides his love for cricket, Mahela has a great interest in food culture. Along with Chef Dharshan, he shared a vision to develop Sri Lanka’s culinary horizons and gave flight to his own gastronomic ideals by stepping in as the chairman of Ministry of Crab. As a message to all of his patrons, Mahela states, “Ministry of Crab is a maiden innings for me & I hope this partnership with my long-time batting partner Kumar & our new coach Dharshan will be a knockout. Hope you all will be bowled over 🙂 ”
We only serve the best catch of the day. When it comes to crab, we don't serve them small, meatless, with one claw missing, or with unevenly sized claws – only the best of the catch will be served on the table.
We won't buy anything frozen, and we do not freeze our seafood. The only use we've found for freezers is to store our food refuse for disposal.
We know that all the fish in the sea can be eaten as sashimi. If a restaurant serves good quality seafood it should be able to serve it as sashimi. Many don't/can't/won't. We do.
We treat all our ingredients with the utmost respect using techniques, which stem from Japanese culinary philosophies and practices. These same principles are employed at the finest Japanese restaurants around the world.
We consider forks and knives merely an option. We have specialized crab utensils to help you pry succulent crab meat from its shell - but digging in with your hands is NOT frowned upon.
We aim to remind you that Thailand’s geography consists of two long coastlines- along the southern Peninsula on the Gulf of Thailand and on the Indian Ocean. This is reflected in the ample amounts of simply amazing seafood available to us.
Our crabs are not farmed and are caught in the wild. Their supply is based on the daily catch which is absolutely dependent on rainfall, strong winds and ambient temperature. We apologize in advance if the size of crab you require is not available.
We are privileged to be serving you in the heart of Bangkok’s Metropolitan, in the center of the food, business, and shopping districts. Ministry of Crab Bangkok is located in the “Sam-ed” building, a retail commercial complex that pays homage to its location- Sukhumvit 31 or as pronounced in Thai Sukhumvit “sam-ed.” We have designed the restaurant with a specialized wine cellar, stocked with wines that pair well with seafood and with long, family-style dining tables, replicating the vibes of our home in Colombo!
